Applying the 30% rule with a campaign approach

Paul Leonardi & Tsedal Neeley shared the 30% rule in their book The Digital Mindset: What It Really Takes to Thrive in the Age of Data, Algorithms, and AI. This rule of second language learning explains that a native level of fluency may require 12000 words. However, to be proficient enough to interact at high levels, only 4000 words are required – the 30% rule. Leonardi & Neeley applied this well-established rule to digital skillsets.

We believe this rule can be applied to many areas of learning. If we can ensure a 30% minimum level of competence then we can maximise the interaction and collaboration in our workshop sessions.

Campaign approach

Our Montreal campaign approach uses a series of short sessions over time allowing us to ensure our participants build that 30% level of competency before they engage in problem-solving and application-based tasks. We are running virtual sessions to offer greater flexibility and global reach. Below is an example of our Montreal campaign timeline demonstrating the application of the 30% rule and the use of virtual and face-to-face sessions.
