Collaboration Conversations – Change your game

Learn about the role of the Sigmoid Curve in explaining the cyclical nature of progress and how ‘changing your game’ is key to continued success and improvement.

At its core, collaboration is fed by a growth mindset and a growth mindset is fundamental to changing your game.

We often see life, business, society and success as part of a linear progression. A progression of constant and never-ending reinforcement and growth, but the opposite is true. Like many things in nature cultures are subject to a more cyclic process of growth and decline. The Sigmoid Curve describes this cycle as having three distinct phases, learning, growth and decline.

In the learning phase, we often experience dips in actual performance. For example: Pivoting to the digital world provided me the opportunity to change my game. Initially, my progress went backwards as I experimented and learnt new things. This time was confronting as I made mistakes, however, with support, I was able turn the corner and start to change my game. Now, with practice, my progress and growth accelerated and I learnt what did and did not work and continued to improve.

As demand for digital collaboration increased, so did the complexity of my work and today I am powering along. Having launched my new book I am approaching the top of my game… and the inevitable decline phase. I have experienced this decline phase a number of times over my life. It sneaks up on you as you struggle to find purpose and passion. The Sigmoid Curve teaches us that the key to continual growth is through an upward shift into a new curve before the current one is too far in decline.

The best time to make this transformational change is when the initial curve is still on the rise since your resources, energy and confidence are high. To put it another way, the best time to change your game is when you are on top of your game.

In reality, life is a series of jumps along the Sigmoid Curve often called a Sigmoid leap. My digital collaborating journey has taught me to continually reinvent myself and change my game. For my mental health’s sake, I am already looking for my next growth opportunity and Sigmoid leap.
