Collaboration and the Success Formula
David Jenkins describes the Success Formula and the relationship between its four components, facilitation, openness, technical and acceptance work and collaboration.
Collaboration and project success has always been built on conversations. Conversations are part of our human design and essential to our survival and the project success formula describes the relationship between the various types of conversations required for a successful project.
The facilitation work describes the planning and delivery of meaningful conversations. This formula shows that effective facilitation fosters openness around the technical work and acceptance work and allows people to think differently and look for better solutions. Facilitation work also builds acceptance of the technical work in people’s hearts and minds. Project success requires we facilitate open, productive, and meaningful conversations. In fact, a successful project demands we include all four types of conversations:
- Facilitation brings the best out of people
- Openness goes beyond the obvious
- Technical work delivers tangible outputs
- Acceptance establishes urgency and commitment
Have you ever written a wonderful, quality technical document that no one read, or a project schedule that was not followed? Have you tried to solve a problem using the same thinking, you used to create it and then expected a different result? How successful were you?
The truth is without acceptance and openness there is no success. These important conversations are one part of the project success formula. Collaboration is the other part of the equation.
Collaboration amplifies and can widen the influence of the project, it encapsulates all our conversations and makes things happen and is built deeply in our psyche and is necessary to our survival. Literally, collaboration is part of our DNA, it’s a law nature and makes us feel good, it’s powered by people through our interactions as we produce amazing outcomes.
